<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for estimating wavenumber capable of reducing costs and workload of a user for setting a threshold and of providing a stable wavenumber estimating capability. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The apparatus for estimating wavenumber comprises a correlation matrix calculating means 4 for calculating a correlation matrix of a received signal received by an antenna 1; an eigen value-eigenvector calculating means 5 for calculating an eigen value and an eigenvector of the correlation matrix; a multi eigenvector forming means 6 for forming a beam; relative to the received signal using the eigenvector; a square-law detecting means 7 for performing square-law detection of a received signal after forming the beam; a threshold setting means 8 for setting a threshold, based on the eigen vector and a desired false alarm probability, a threshold detecting means 9 for performing threshold detection, according to the threshold relative to the received signal after the square-law detection; a signal detecting means 10 for detecting a signal, based on the results of threshold detection; and a binary integration means 11 for calculating the wavenumber estimate value by integrating the results of signal detection.
