<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display allowing writing of display information by applying external force onto the display surface of the image display and maintaining clearly the display state of the display information displayed before writing of the display information even when the display information has been written. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A write-in forbidding voltage is applied to an upper electrode 62 and a lower electrode 52 corresponding to each pixel space where a specific display color is displayed. The write-in forbidding voltage is a voltage of the magnitude preventing positively charged black particles 33b from being attracted upwardly toward a display layer 63 when a partition 71 is contracted by external force. A write-in permitting voltage is a voltage of the magnitude permitting the positively charged black particles 33b to be attracted upwardly toward the display layer 63 when the partition 71 is contracted by external force.
