<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the hydrogen release characteristics of AlH<SB>3</SB>without dehydrogenating it. Ž<P>SOLUTION: By performing mechanical milling by adding a solid material (preferably a hydride, more preferably a monovalent or bivalent hydride) for suppressing dehydrogenation to AlH<SB>3</SB>, a newly-formed surface is formed while restraining dehydrogenation of thermodynamically unstable AlH<SB>3</SB>. As a monovalent hydride, LiH, NaH and KH are exemplified. As a bivalent hydride, MgH<SB>2</SB>, CaH<SB>2</SB>, SrH<SB>2</SB>, and BaH<SB>2</SB>are exemplified. The mechanical milling is performed preferably in an atmosphere consisting of an inert gas, a reducing gas or a mixed gas thereof.
