<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent breakage of a lamp, even if wax material melts, and to rapidly detect the high temperature state of the lamp. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The short-arc type discharge lamp is formed, by arranging a negative electrode head 20 and a positive electrode head 30 vertically, and jointing the positive electrode head 30 to an electrode support bar 17B with the wax material 40. A bar-shaped retaining member 60 is inserted inside the positive electrode head 30 and is mounted horizontally. Here, a part of the retaining member 60 is arranged in a groove 33, formed on the electrode support bar 17A. When the wax material 40 is melted, the positive electrode head 30 is descended by a distance D11, and by locking the retaining member 60 at an end part of the groove 33, the positive electrode head 30 at the position is held.
