<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a seat rotating mechanism for a chair type stairway elevator, having improved safety by simplifying the operation of locking/unlocking the rotation of a seat to ensure the rotation of the seat while eliminating the existence of a part protruded to the outside of the seat. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The seat 6 is mounted on a rotational center shaft 12 erected on the upper face of an elevator body by a boss 15 so that the seat 6 can be rotated around the rotational center shaft 12. A lock pin is provided on a solenoid 17 fixed to the boss 15 so as to be vertically moved by the solenoid 17. On a top plate 11 of the elevator body, an engaging part is arranged for engaging with the lock pin to fix the rotation of the seat 6 when the seat 6 is positioned at an elevating attitude and at a getting-on/-off attitude.
