Olefins are dimerized or co-dimerized by contact with a catalyst prepared by decomposing a cobalt or nickel salt supported on active carbon, and in the presence of a minor amount of a diene, e.g. butadiene, isoprene or cyclopentadiene. The diene may be present in the feed or the catalyst may be pretreated therewith. The catalyst may also be pretreated with hydrogen. Suitable dimerization conditions are a temperature in the range -40 DEG to +200 DEG C., and a pressure sufficient to maintain the reactant at least partially in the liquid phase. Examples describe the dimerization of "impure" butene-1 (i.e. containing 700 p.p.m. butadiene), and the co-dimerization of ethylene with "impure" butene-1, the products in each case being predominantly linear. |
