The device (1) has a gas sensor unit (13) with a gas sensor (15) e.g. nitrogen dioxide sensitive FET sensor, and an oxidation device (17) for oxidizing nitric oxide to nitrogen dioxide. The oxidation device comprises a non consumed catalyst e.g. thermal active catalyst and photo chemical catalyst, for catalyzing the oxidation of the nitric oxide to the nitrogen dioxide. A generating unit is provided for generating oxygen species. The oxidation device is provided at an inlet opening in a measuring chamber, and integrated in a sensor element.
