The method involves acquiring an input signal for controlling cleaning of a liquid detergent reservoir of a household washing machine. Liquid product contained in the reservoir is emptied towards a tub of the machine by a detergent dispensing pump during a predetermined period. The liquid product is evacuated from the tub towards a sewage system by a drain pump, where the pumps are actuated by a control unit of the machine. The tub is rinsed by introducing water into the tub and by evacuating water from the tub towards the sewage system.
