[Also in Division F1] A bearing 10 supports a hollow rotatable shaft 4 in a fixed structure 11 and is supplied with lubricant by means of screw-feed devices disposed within the shaft 4. In an embodiment, a gas turbine has coaxial inner and outer shafts 2, 4 having a low-pressure turbine 1 and a high-pressure turbine 3 mounted thereon respectively and driving low and high pressure compressors 5, 6. The outer shaft 4 is mounted in roller bearings 10, each having an outer race 14 attached to a fixed structure 11 and an inner race 13 attached to the outer rotatable shaft 4. The shaft 2 has screw-devices 19, 23 formed or mounted thereon, the screw-devices being separated axially by an annular space 21. Each screw-device is provided with a number of parallel helical grooves, the helical grooves 20 on the screw-device 19 being of opposite hand to the helical grooves 24 on the screw-device 23. In use lubricant, supplied by a pipe 17 to the helical grooves 20, is pumped by the rotary action of the shaft 2 and enters the annular space 21. The lubricant is prevented from escaping by the helical grooves 24 and is conveyed to the bearings 10, via drillings 22 in the outer shaft 4 and an annular duct 16 and channels 15 in the inner race 13. In a modification, the screw-feed devices 19, 23 may be provided on the internal surface of the shaft 4. |
