[Also in Divisions C3 and C5] Organo-tin compounds of general formula in which each of R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> is an aryl group containing two or three benzene rings and n is an integer, may be prepared by reaction of aryl magnesium halides with a tin dihalide. The compounds are generally low polymers with n up to ten and the polymeric form is obtained from the monomer upon standing. The benzene rings may be fused or separate. The reactions are carried out under anhydrous conditions in an organic solvent which may be an acyclic ether, e.g. diethyl ether or the dimethyl ether of ethylene glycol or a cyclic ether, e.g. tetrahydrofuran and at a temperature of 50-150‹ C., e.g. reflux temperature. The compounds, which are used as additives to lubricant compositions comprising a polyphenyl ether or polyphenylpolyether or a mixture of both, may be bisdiphenyltin, dinaphthyltin, diterphenyltin, diphenanthryltin, dianthryltin, diacenaphthyltin, and biphenylylnaphthyl tin. |
