<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To propose a method and device for generating a favorable face illustration by producing an N-valued face image in a photographic image including a plurality of persons. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A face illustration image generation method includes: detecting a face image from a photographic image; gray-scaling the determined face image; and segmenting an image region for threshold determination; designating a range wider than the image region for threshold determination as an illustration generation range; generating a correction histogram by performing data correction to the luminance histogram of the image region for threshold determination with the luminance of black eyes and a shadow section of the wings of the nose detected by a characteristic point detection means; determining the value of the threshold on the basis of the correction histogram from the image of the range determined by the generation range determination means; binarizing the image of the range determined by the generation range determination means on the basis of the threshold; and generating the binary image of the face.
