A shale shaker for separating solids from a solids laden drilling mud, the shale shaker comprising a screen assembly (40) comprising a screen support (42) supporting at least one layer of screening material (48) having an outer periphery (48a) within an outer periphery of said support (42) said outer peripheries binding a peripheral area (46) characterised in that the periphery (48a) of the at least one layer of screening material (48) is planar with or recessed from at least a substantial portion of said peripheral area (46).
