PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device which supplies energy which shifts breakdown into arc discharge to a discharge lamp while preventing an abnormal lighting operation and a lighting failure. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device includes a charging circuit provided in parallel with a smoothing capacitor 13 connected with the output terminal of a DC/DC converter 2 and arranged such that one end of a lighting assistant capacitor 16 is connected with the joint A of one end of a shunt resistor 14 and the output terminal of the DC/DC converter 2; and a discharge circuit provided in parallel with the smoothing capacitor 13 and arranged such that one end of the lighting assistant capacitor 16 is connected with the joint B of the other end of the shunt resistor 14 and an inverter 3.
