<p>The invention discloses an anti-fouling paint composition comprising: (a) 3-15% w/v chitosan Cu(I) complex; (b) 5-25% w/v Fe2O3; (c) 1-3 % acetic acid; (d) 57-91% deionised water. Furthermore it discloses the method for preparing said paint by (a) preparing chitosan having a molecular weight of 100 000-250 000 g/mol, with deacetylation degrees between 80% and 92%, respectively, from exoskeletons of crustaceans such as shrimps, prawns, and/or crabs; (b) forming a solid chitosan Cu(I) complex by mixing chitosan obtained in step (a) with Cu(I) oxide, using ethanol as the solvent, stirring the mixture for 2 to 3 hours, then performing filtration and drying the sample at a temperature of 40-60°C; (c) mixing the solid complex of chitosan Cu(I) obtained in stage (b) with acetic acid under conditions of mechanical stirring and at 100-300 rpm for 3 to 5 hours, then adding Fe2O3, whereafter deionised water is added until the desired volume is reached.</p> |
