PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for counting microorganisms by classifying them for each of the length of minor axis of the microorganisms by utilizing a digital image of the microorganisms economically and rapidly without requiring expert knowledge on the forms of the microorganisms. SOLUTION: This simple method for counting the microorganisms having≥5μm minor axis is characterized by comprising (a) a process of obtaining the digital image of the microorganisms, (b) a process of binary digitizing the digital image obtained in the process (a), and recognizing one cluster in which picture elements connect with each other, as one microorganism in the obtained binary digitized image, (c) a process of counting the area of each of the microorganisms recognized in the process (b), (d) a process of calculating the minor axis of an ellipse having an optional ratio of (1:1.1) to (1:8) of the major axis to the minor axis and having the same area with the each of the areas of the microorganisms calculated in the process (c), and (e) a process of counting by classifying each of the microorganisms recognized in the process (b) as the microorganisms having each of the minor axes calculated in the process (d).
