A valve assembly for use in the backwash assembly of a strainer assembly, the backwash assembly comprising a plurality of backwash conduits each having an outlet opening, the valve assembly comprising a valve plate 50 having an opening 52 therein, the valve plate being moveable to bring the opening into alignment with the outlet opening of a backwash conduit 28 to thereby connect the backwash conduit with an outlet conduit. Preferably the valve plate is rotatable and rotation of the valve plate causes the opening therein to move into and out of alignment with successive backwash conduits. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a method of straining a fluid; and (2) a strainer system. Advantageously the inventions are used for removing solid materials such as mud and sand from seawater in offshore oil and gas operations.
