A composition suitable for use in the treatment of shaped synthetic polyester articles in conjunction with an optical brightening agent, comprises a dispersion or solution containing a copolymer comprising repeat units identical with those of the polymer from which the article is made and modifying polyoxyalkylene groups to modify the surface of the articles treated, 0.05-5% by weight based on the weight of the copolymer of a phenol antioxidant in which the hydroxyl group of the phenol is sterically hindered by one or more adjacent groups in the molecule, e.g. bis-(2-hydroxy-3 -3-a methylcyclohexyl - 5 - methylphenyl) methane and bis - (3 - methyl - 6 - tert. - butylphenol) 4,41-sulphide, and 0.005-5% by weight based on the weight of the copolymer of a peroxide decomposer which is a thiophosphate, thiophosphite and/or xanthate. Suitable thiophosphates are compounds having the formula in which X is oxygen or sulphur, at least one X being sulphur, R and R1 are the same or different and are alkyl radicals having 2-20 carbon atoms, aryl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl radicals and M is a metal ion of valency n from Groups I or II of the Periodic Table or chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt or nickel, e.g. zinc di-isopropyldithiophosphate, suitable thiophosphites are those having the formula in which X is oxygen or sulphur, at least one X being sulphur, and R, R1 and R2 are the same or different and are alkyl radicals having 2-20 carbon atoms, aryl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl radicals, e.g. tridodecyltrithiophosphite, and suitable xanthates are those having the formula in which is a metal ion of valency n and R is an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl radical. The phenolic antioxidant and peroxide decomposer may be dissolved in a solvent, e.g. condensates of ethylene oxide with alcohols or phenols, prior to dispersing them in the aqueous copolymer dispersion. When a metal salt of thiophosphoric acid or xanthic acid is used a second solvent, e.g. chloroform, dioxan, ethyl acetate, the dimethylether of ethylene glycol, dimethyl formamide or dimethylsulphoxide may be used. Suitable brightening agents which may be added to the composition or applied to the articles previously are 1,2-bis-(61-methylbenzoxazol - 21 - yl) ethylene, 2,5 - bis - (tertbutylbenzoxazol - 21 - yl) thiophene, 2 - cyano - 4 - naphtha - triazol - 211 - yl - 41 - chlorostilbene and 3 - phenyl - 7 - (31 - methyl - 11 - pyrazolyl) coumarin.ALSO:The dulling of optical brighteners applied to shaped synthetic fibre-forming polymer articles made from a polyester, polyacrylonitrile or a polyamide, in conjunction with a copolymer comprising repeat units identical with those of the polymer from which the article is made and modifying polyoxyalkylene groups to modify the surface of the articles treated is reduced by padding on to the article a dispersion or solution of the copolymer to which is added 0.05-5% by weight based on the weight of the copolymer of a phenol antioxidant in which the hydroxyl group of the phenol is sterically hindered by one or more adjacent groups in the molecule, e.g. bis (2 - hydroxy - 3 - a - methylcyclohexyl - 5 - methylphenyl) methane and bis (3 - methyl - 6 - tert. butylphenol) - 4, 4/sv -sulphide, and 0.005-5% by weight based on the weight of the copolymer of a peroxide decomposer which is a thiophosphate, thiophosphite and/or xanthate. After padding with the treating composition the articles may be heated. Suitable brightening agents are 1, 2 - bis - (6/sv - methylbenzoxazol - 2/sv - yl) ethylene, 2, 5 - bis (tertbutylbenzoxazol - 2/sv - yl) thiophene, 2 - cyano - 4 - naphtha - triazol - 2" - yl - 4/sv - chlorostilbene and 3 - phenyl - 7 - (3/sv methyl - 1/sv - pyrazolyl) coumarin. Filaments, fibres, yarns and fabrics made from polyethylene terephthalate, nylon or polyacrylonitrile alone or in admixture with cotton may be treated.
