A lubricant composition comprises a major proportion of a lubricant, e.g. a paraffinic luboil distillate and a minor proportion, say 0.1 to 10%, of a polymeric compound having free alcohol groups, in the form of half esters of a glycol, formed by reacting a polymeric group having free carboxylic acid groups with acyclic ether, the reaction being catalyzed by an alkaline Li compound. For specified polymers see Division C3. The lubricant may also contain triphenyl phosphate and 4,41-methylene-bis-(2,6-ditert.-buty phenol).ALSO:A polymeric product having free alcohol groups, in the form of half esters of a glycol, is prepared by reacting a polymeric compound having free carboxylic acid groups with a cyclic ether, the reaction being catalysed by an alkaline lithium compound. The free carboxylic acid groups may originate from monomeric unsaturated mono- or di-carboxylic acids, the process being applied preferably to the conversion of copolymers of monobasic unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acids, e.g. copolymers of methacrylic acid and at least one methacrylic ester, particularly esters of methacrylic acid and aliphatic alcohols with 6 to 30 carbon atoms per molecule, for instance lauryl and stearyl methacrylates. Specified lithium compounds are LiOH, Li salts of weak acids, e.g. of carbonic acid and organic acids such as the polymeric compound with free carboxylic acid groups, Li2CO3, LiOCOCH3, LiH and lithium alkoxides. Ethylene oxide is the specified cyclic ether. |
