<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus capable of reducing possibility that an imaging element burns even at an non-operating state, and to provide a method for controlling such an imaging apparatus. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When a power switch 223 is turned off, and a camera becomes the non-operating state, a second lens group 101b is moved to the closest position (a step S14), and a diaphragm blade 103 is set to the minimum aperture (a step S15). Thus, since an image of the sun is not focused on a light receiving surface of the imaging element 205, and brightness of the image is also dark, the possibility that the light receiving surface of the imaging element 205 is damaged by burning is reduced.
