<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fabric opener of a buttonholing machine which permits a space to be saved. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A fabric opening means 23 is provided with two links 25 and 26 keeping the base end supported on the feeding base 11 and free ends rotatable and an actuator 44 operating them. The two links 25 and 26 are arranged, directed in the longitudinal directions in which their lengthwise directions intersect the movement direction of a fabric receiving plate 22 at right angles and oppositely arranged above and below so as to position the free end side of the link 26 on the base end side of the link 25, a link connecting section 47 connecting the two links 25 and 26 is provided between the base ends and the free ends, and plate connecting sections 25C and 26C used for connection with the fabric receiving plate 22 are provided nearer to the free end sides than the link connecting section 47.
