<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an observation apparatus for acquiring information about the whole object to be observed (phase object) such as a cell. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This observation apparatus 1 comprises a stage 10 for supporting the object 5 to be observed; a lighting unit 20 for radiating illumination light where bright parts and dark parts are mutually and repeatedly arranged to the object 5 to be observed supported by the stage 10; an image-forming optical system 31 for guiding scattered light from the object 5 to be observed to which the illumination light is radiated to an imaging surface 33 and forming an image of the object 5 to be observed; an imaging element 32 for imaging the image of the object 5 to be observed which is image-formed on the imaging surface 33 by the image-forming optical system 31. The observation apparatus further comprises a stage driving section 11 for relatively moving the stage 10 in the repeating direction of the bright parts and dark parts of the illumination light.
