The method involves activating an imaging device, when the vehicle is at standstill or when a vehicle speed exceeds a preset minimum speed of the vehicle. The imaging device detects a defined environment range (7), particularly in front of a vehicle driver cabin (2) and a driver- or a co-driver-sided vehicle lateral area. The visual flow caused by object movements within the defined environment range is detected and evaluated by an evaluation device in the stationary vehicle. An independent claim is included for a driver assistance system for a vehicle, particularly a commercial vehicle, for image-supported monitoring of vehicle environment.
