<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the durability of a membrane electrode assembly under a low-temperature environment. <P>SOLUTION: The membrane electrode assembly 20 is made by bonding a single-layer anode catalyst electrode 30 to one surface of an electrolyte film 22 and a cathode catalyst electrode 40 to the other surface of the electrolyte film 22, the cathode catalyst electrode 40 being a double-layer structure composed of a first catalyst layer 41 and a second catalyst layer 42. The first and second catalyst layers 41 and 42 contain a carbon and an ionomer carrying a Pt catalyst at a carbon-to-ionomer weight ratio I/C of 0.75, and the peeling strength of the second catalyst layer 42 is greater than that of the first catalyst layer 41. As a result, with proton conductivity upon occurrence of catalyst layer breakage on the second catalyst layer 42 ensured, catalyst breakage due to a temperature change is caused on the second catalyst layer 42 separated from the electrolyte film 22. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
