PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic document feeder wherein exchanging operation of a paper detection sensor is easily performed by detaching a background plate, because the background plate is freely attached/detached, and an image forming apparatus using the same. SOLUTION: A movable area of the background plate 6 located above a contact glass constituting a document reading part is regulated by a background plate holding mechanism 7. By pulling a knob part 7a of the background plate holding mechanism 7 to the outside in a document width direction (front side of the feeder), a hook part 7b of the background plate holding mechanism 7 is removed from the background plate, and the background plate 6 is detached from below. Such operation is performed in a state where the automatic document feeder is not attached to the scanner. When a resist sensor 11 or a reverse sensor 12 breaks down, the background plate 6 is detached from below, so that the exchanging operation of the sensors 11 and 12 is easily performed.
