<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight for a liquid crystal display apparatus and a liquid crystal display apparatus using the same which can provide a high-quality image by improving operability and suppressing a decreasing luminance on a screen even when a whole region in which point light sources are arranged is divided into a plurality of small regions and a backlight unit corresponding to each small region is provided. <P>SOLUTION: The backlight for the liquid crystal display apparatus in which a plurality of point light source elements 2 are arranged in a plurality of rows in a planar state is composed so that the whole region in which the point light source elements 2 are arranged is divided into small regions. In addition, a plurality of backlight units composed from supporting substrates 31, 32 for supporting the point light source elements 2 and point light source elements 2 which are arranged on the supporting substrates for respective small regions and reflecting sheets which are arranged on the supporting substrates for the backlight units with openings in arrangement positions of the point light source elements.
