An image decoding/encoding method and an apparatus thereof using motion estimation of sub pixel unit for minimizing the overhead are provided to perform estimation and compensation by generating accurate sub pixel through information of the sub pixel. A weighted value about each low sub-pixel is determined for interpolation between low accuracy sub pixels(1010). The interpolation direction about the low coarse coding minor is determined based on the location of the high accuracy sub-pixel between low coarse sub-pixels(1020). A motion prediction is performed in a high accuracy sub pixel unit(1030).
