PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separator for a lithium battery capable of maintaining an excellent stable performance for a long period of the lithium battery using an aqueous electrolyte, and the lithium battery capable of maintaining an excellent stable performance for a long period. SOLUTION: The separator for the lithium battery has a first protection layer which is stable to the aqueous electrolyte formed with a thickness of 5μm or less on one of the surface of a lithium ion conductive inorganic solid electrolyte. The lithium battery has the separator in which a first protection layer which is stable to the aqueous electrolyte is formed with the thickness of 5μm or less on one of the surface of a lithium ion conductive inorganic electrolyte, a positive electrode which contains an aqueous component and is positioned on the side on which the first protection layer of the separator is formed, and a negative electrode which contains metal Li and is positioned on the opposite side to the positive electrode through the separator.
