<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an observation apparatus capable of observing an object to be observed (phase object) such as cells without moving the object. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An observation apparatus 1 includes: an illumination part 20 for irradiating an object 5 to be observed such as a cell 6 supported on a stage 10 with illumination light in which a bright part 22 and a dark part 23 are arranged in an alternately repeated manner; a reflection surface 11 for reflecting illumination light transmitted through the object 5; an image-forming optical system 30 which is disposed on the same side as the illumination part 20 from the stage 10 and guides, to an imaging surface 31a, scattered light from the object 5 irradiated with the illumination light reflected from the reflection surface 11 to form an image of the object 5; and an image sensor 31 for imaging the image of the object 5 formed on the imaging surface 31a by the image-forming optical system 30.
