The recording power needed to record data at a higher recording capacity than a standard recording capacity is appropriately calculated. The write peak power (Pw) for an optical disc is optimized at the preset standard recording line speed, and the optimized write peak power (Pw0) is specified. A second write peak power (Pw2) at the standard recording line speed is specified in accordance with the relationship data, which represent the relationship between the recording line speed or the recording capacity determined from that recording line speed and (Pw) or an index value which is used to calculate (Pw). A third write peak power (Pw3), at a specified recording capacity greater than the standard recording capacity corresponding to a specified recording line speed slower than the standard recording line speed or to the standard recording line speed, is specified in accordance with the relationship data. (Pw3) is adjusted by the difference between (Pw0) and (Pw2), and the write peak power (Pwa) after the adjustment is calculated. |
