Disclosed is a lubricant containing a compound represented by formula (1). In the formula, n is substantially 2, 3, or 4 and R is a C1-4 fluoroalkyl group. Rf is -CF2O(CF2CF2O)x(CF2O)yCF2- or -CF2CF2O(CF2CF2CF2O)zCF2CF2-. x, y, and z are each zero or a positive real number such that the number average molecular weight of the fluoropolyether represented by HOCH2-Rf-CH2OH and containing aforementioned Rf is 500 to 2000. The molecular weight distribution of said fluoropolyether (PD, weight average molecular weight/number average molecular weight) is 1.0 to 1.5.
