PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas separation membrane element having a high separation performance by controlling the thickness of a zeolite membrane formed on the surface of a porous support body, and the thickness of a zeolite inside crystal layer formed under the surface of the porous support body. SOLUTION: The gas separation membrane element is formed with the zeolite membrane 4 with a given thickness on the surface of a porous support body 1, and the zeolite inside crystal layer 3 with a given thickness under the surface of the porous support body 1 by the hydrothermal synthesis. The thickness A of the zeolite membrane 4 is 1.5μm≤A≤5.0μm, the thickness B of the zeolite inside crystal layer 3 is 3.0μm≤B≤8.0μm, and a ratio of the thickness B of the zeolite inside crystal layer 3 to the thickness A of the zeolite membrane 4 is 1≤B/A≤4.
