<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader for suppressing influences by weight of an original in starting reading of the original by mounting the original on a reading table and pressing it and starting read operation in the state that the original is appropriately pressed. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A photocopier measures weight of the original by detecting load added to a platen glass at a load detection part (a load sensor) (S104) when a book scan mode is selected (S101: Yes), the original (book original) is placed on a platen glass, and a start button is pressed (S103: Yes). A threshold to be reference of read start in accordance with original weight is set (S105). After that, when the original on the platen glass is pressed, its detected load is a threshold or larger (S107: Yes), and the load remains the threshold or larger for a fixed period (S108: Yes), reading is started (step S109).
