949,756. Deforming spring ends. TORRING- TON MFG. CO. Oct. 29, 1962 [Oct. 30, 1961], No. 40855/62. Heading B3E. A spring looping machine for bending the end coil(s) of a spring includes a bending member operated by a cam. Springs are released one at a time from a tube 56 by a cam-operated gate 70 in conjunction with a cam-operated member 82 engaging springs left in the tube. The spring drops into a tube 112, carried by a lever 120, and is held therein by a spring-urged finger carried by a cam-operated pivoted lever 162. The spring is allowed partially to fall from the tube 112 to be engaged and rotated by an indexing head 182, having a blade 188, Fig. 10, thereon, which is raised by cam means and rotated by cam lever, segment and pulley means, Figs. 6, 7 and 8 (not shown) to engage the end coil 192 of the spring and rotate it to the correct position for bending. The head 182 is then lowered leaving the spring partially in the tube 112. A tool 246 on a slide 244 is then moved forward by a cam 240 to separate the lowermost coil 248, Fig. 14, and a tool 256 on a slide 254 is moved forward by a cam 250 to the position of Fig. 14. A tool 270, having surfaces 278, 280, on a slide 268 is then moved forward by a cam 264 to bend the coil 248 over on to the tool 256. The tool 270 may then be moved to the position of Fig. 15 to extend the bent coil 248, by swinging the guideway for the slide 268 about a pivot by link and crank means operated by a cam 300. After the bending the lever 120 carrying the tube 112 is swung by a cam 128 to a position above a tube 308 of a spring inverter 42 into which the spring is dropped. The tube 308 is carried by a holder 310, Fig. 17, which is then rotated 180 degrees by belt and pulley means 326 driven by a gear segment 336 on a lever rocked by a cam. The spring is held in the tube 308 during such rotation by a cap 314 on a spring 316 held away from the tube 308 by stops 318, 320 at the beginning and end of the movement of the holder 310. The spring is thus dropped into means which position it and form a loop at its other end. |
