[Also in Division H5] A sample insertion device for use in a mass spectrometer ion source comprises a tubular electric heating element 9 resiliently mounted on a body 1 which can be inserted into an aperture in the wall of the source chamber, the free end 12 of the heating element carrying the sample. In use, the sample is presented to the electron beam of an electron bombardment type source. The heating element is resiliently attached by means of the spring 11 to tho bushing 4. Conductors 5, 6 for the filament of the heating element 9 pass through the bushing 4. The bushing is of glass and body 1 of polytetrafluoroethylene. In opening the source to an air or nitrogen source 33 to change the sample the valve V 1 in the channel 19 leading to the main body of the spectrometer is first closed and valves V 3 , V 5 opened. Valves V 2 , V 4 communicate with rotary pumps 31, 34. |
