<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal halide lamp and a headlight for an automobile having a high luminance at a low beam. <P>SOLUTION: The metal halide lamp is provided with an airtight vessel 1 having a light emitting part 11 with a discharging space 15 formed inside and a sealing part 12 formed on both ends of the light emitting part 11, a discharging medium enclosed in the discharging space 15 containing metal halide 2 and rare gas and not substantially containing mercury, and a pair of electrodes 31 of which the one end is sealed in the sealing part 12 and the other end is extruded out to the discharging space 15, and a tube axis is arranged almost horizontally. When a volume of the discharging space 15 is V and an enclosed amount of the metal halide 2 is M, a formula of 0.008 mg/mm<SP>3</SP>≤M/V≤0.015 mg/mm<SP>3</SP>is satisfied. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
