PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backrest of a chair in which part of a seated person is prevented from directly abutting on a support member to improve sitting feeling. SOLUTION: The backrest of a chair includes a film-like member 2 such as mesh, film, or cloth, a support member 3 to retain a part of the periphery of the film-like member 2, and a release portion 4 released from the support member 3 in the periphery of the film-like member 2. The support member 3 is attached to a frame 6 of the chair 5 in such an arrangement that at least a part of the release portion 4 directly supports a load of the seated person only by itself.
