PURPOSE: A new paper money detecting apparatus and a method thereof are provided to classify a new paper money and an old paper money by using a supersonic wave. CONSTITUTION: A supersonic wave transmitter(150) transmits a supersonic wave to the paper currency. A supersonic receiver(160) is included in the location which is opposite to the supersonic transmitter. The stiff state of the paper currency is detected based on the supersonic wave transmitting the paper currency. The waveform of the supersonic wave transmitting the stiff paper currency is uniform. The supersonic transmitting sensor(154) generates a supersonic wave.
