<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an observation apparatus and an observation method which can obtain detailed information of an object such as a cell and display it effectively. <P>SOLUTION: The observation apparatus 1 for observing the surface or interior of an observation object 9 includes: light sources 11, 12; lenses 21 to 25; an aperture 31; an optical multiplexer 41; an optical demultiplexer 42; a half mirror 43; a photographing section 51; an analysis section 52; a display section 53; a light receiving section 61; a displacement detection section 62; a piezo actuator 71; a drive section 72; a mirror 73; a stage 81; a drive section 82; and a control section 90. The analysis section 52 determines the intensity component and phase component of second reflected light generated on the surface or in the interior of the observation object 9 on the basis of an interference light image obtained by setting an optical path length difference to be each target value successively by the phase shift method and photographing by the photographing section 51.
