<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the overheating of a motor peripheral part while suppressing deterioration in comfortability of a vehicle, in an internal combustion engine provided with a variable valve gear. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An ECU 100 performs a switching frequency control process with respect to the engine 200 provided with the variable valve gear 210 having a first variable mechanism 600 continuously varying the operating angle A and lift L of an intake valve 201 by controlling the driving of the switching circuit 310 of an actuator 300. In the process, the ECU 100 sets the switching frequency Fpwm of the switching circuit 310 for pulse width modulation (PWM) control of a drive motor 320 to F2 when engine speed NE is equal to or less than a reference value NE1 or the operating angle A of the intake valve 201 is equal to or less than a reference value A1, and also sets the switching frequency Fpwm to F1(F1<F2) when the engine speed NE is higher than the reference value NE1 and the operating angle A of the intake valve 201 is larger than the reference value A1.
