The method involves controlling a variable valve train (50) during operation of an internal combustion engine such that an exhaust valve (11) is opened so that gas present in a combustion chamber (30) is leaked in to an exhaust gas line (16), and the exhaust valve is closed. The train is controlled during operating condition of deceleration fuel cut-off such that the exhaust valve during deceleration fuel cut-off is priorly closed than during the operation of the engine. The train is controlled such that overlapping of opening phases of an inlet valve and the outlet valve is minimized. An independent claim is also included for a control device for an internal combustion engine.
