[Also in Divisions C4 and H1] A glass laser active material comprises a phosphate base containing 0À01 to 30 weight per cent of Er 2 O 3 , and 0À01 to 55 weight per cent of Yb 2 O 3 as a sensitizer, the total amount of erbium and ytterbium ions, calculated as the oxides, being not more than 70 weight per cent. Durability and stability of the glass is increased by incorporating up to 20 weight per cent of Al 2 O 3 or of one or more of the oxides of aluminium, lanthanum, gadolinium, gallium, scandium, yttrium, neodymium, cerium, europium, manganese, molybdenum and chromium. The fluxing properties of the glass are improved by the inclusion of up to 20 weight per cent of ZnO or of one or more of the oxides of magnesium, cadmium, calcium, strontium and barium. A first example of a glass consists, by weight, of 52À0% P 2 O 5 , 47À5% Yb 2 O 3 and 0À5% Er 2 O 3 . A second example consists, by weight, of 8À44% Al 2 O 3 , 61À3% P 2 O 5 , 14À66% ZnO, 0À2% Nd 2 O 3 , 0À5% Er 2 O 3 and 14À9% Yb 2 O 3 . The active material may be used in an optically-pumped Q-switched laser in a rangefinder and is stated to have frequency stability at 1À536 microns.
