Apparatus for carrying out the bonding process of 43,160Q. comprises a support (22) for locating a lasted upper (20) in a press and a device for picking up, e.g. by suction pads (36), a sole placed on the upper. With sole and upper spaced, e.g. by about 2 1/2 to 3", a radiant heater is positioned between the sole and the upper to active a preformed open sheet of thermoplastic adhesive, as described in 43,160Q, which has been spot attached by a heated tool to the sole. After about 4 seconds the heater is withdrawn and the sole lowered to position it on the upper and light pressure. The upper support is then moved laterally to a position beneath a press pad and full pressure is applied to firmly bond the sole to the upper. |
