[Also in Division F2] A stepping motor has a toothed stator cooperating with the toothed outer periphery of a rotor assembly with a viscous fluid present in the fluid-tight motor chamber to fill the stator/ rotor gap and thereby minimize the oscillations of the rotor on completion of a step. The rotor comprises a shaft mounted permanent magnet 19 with two polepieces 17, 18 which have teeth on their outer periphery and co-operate with wound stators 20, 21 which are shaped to provide a number of salient poles separated by winding slots where the face of these poles is also toothed. The stator windings may be energized from a 2-piece A.C. supply, or preferably from a D.C. supply in sequence, so that the rotor is stepped round. A sealed casing carrying bearings 14, 15 is filled with viscous fluid 39 through closable port 40. A seal 42 on the shaft prevents leakage at one end and a plate 36 of plastics material both closes the other end of the casing and acts as the terminal board. The amount of damping provided can be changed by using a different viscous fluid. |
