Novel acids of formula in which R 1 is C 2-8 linear or branched alkyl, C 2-4 linear or branched alkenyl, C 3-4 alkynyl or C 5-6 cycloalkenyl, R 2 and R 3 each represent C 1-3 linear or branched alkyl, C 2-4 alkenyl, C 1-4 alkoxy or halo, R 2 and R 3 being identical or different, one of said R 2 and R 3 can be H and R 4 is H, C 1-4 linear or branched alkyl and alkaline and alkaline-earth metal salts and amine salts of said acids are prepared by (a) hydrolysis of the corresponding nitriles or lower alkyl esters, or (b) alkylating a corresponding lower alkyl ester in which the -OR 1 group is replaced by OH followed by hydrolysis to the acid and where desired in (a) or (b) followed by formation of a salt. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a compound I or a salt thereof together with a pharmaceutical carrier, are administered orally or parenterally and are effective as anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic and anti-spasmodic agents.
