Disclosed is a method for determining whether a compound is a neurotrypsin inhibitor, wherein the compound is incubated together with neurotrypsin, a variant thereof retaining the neurotrypsin activity or a fragment comprising the protease domain of neurotrypsin and with a protein or peptide comprising agrin, a variant thereof retaining the agrin activity or a fragment comprising the alpha- or the beta-cleavage site of agrin, in an aqueous buffer solution, the amount of cleavage of agrin is measured, and the compound is determined to be a neurotrypsin inhibitor if the amount of cleavage of agrin is reduced compared to a reaction in which the compound is omitted.
