PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of machining for forming a sliding surface on a cylinder wall of a cylinder liner of a piston type combustion engine, in particular low-speed large diesel engine of the two stroke type, where a piston is arranged in a cylinder liner and reciprocates in the cylinder axis direction. SOLUTION: The method of machining includes a step for providing a cylinder liner material and a step for cutting cylinder wall 2 using a cutting tool, forms a capillary-like fine structure 6 having circumferential capillaries 61 on the cylinder wall 2 in a fine-machining step, and extends the capillary-like fine structure 6 helically along the cylinder axis 4 of a cylinder liner 3. The method of machining forms cross connections between the circumferential capillaries 61 of the capillary-like fine structure 6 by a transverse machining method so that the capillary-like fine structure 6 is substantially maintained.
