<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electro-optical device effectively removing the thermal current of a photosensor and an error due to stray light. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The electro-optical device is equipped with: a liquid crystal panel 911 in which a nematic phase liquid crystal material 922 is held between a first substrate and a second substrate, to form a display area; and a photodetection section which detects the illuminance of the surrounding light of the panel. The photodetection section is equipped with: a first photosensor (light-receiving sensor 350P) which is provided in the peripheral part of the display area of the first or the second substrate and irradiated with external light; and a second photosensor (light-shielded sensor 350D) which is provided in the peripheral part of the display area of the first or the second substrate and whose irradiation with the external light is cut off.
