PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens system having a high optical performance, optical equipment having this zoom lens system, and a variable magnification method using the zoom lens system. SOLUTION: This zoom lens system ZL mounted on an electronic still camera 1 or the like is constituted by a first lens group G1 having a negative refractive power, and a second lens group G2 having a positive refractive power sequentially from the object side. The second lens group G2 has at least two cemented lenses. Either of two cemented lenses has a positive lens on the object side and a negative lens on an image side. When the lens position state varies from a wide angle end state to a telescopic end state, the interval between the first lens group G1 and the second lens group G2 varies.
