<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus and a data compression method for suppressing the degradation of quality in an image formed on a sheet of paper without changing the number of pixels constituting the image. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A control unit 400 provided on the image forming apparatus 100 has a calculating section 441 constituting one set pixel of interest by a plurality of adjacent pixels and calculating the value of the set pixel of interest involving first depiction data based on values of the plurality of adjacent pixels involving the first depiction data, a compression section 442 encoding the value of the set pixel of interest involving the first depiction data, a distribution section 443 distributing an error or a difference between the value of the set pixel of interest involving the first depiction data and an expansion value of the set pixel of interest involving the second depiction data to peripheral pixels around the set pixel of interest and a shift section 444 repetitively shifting the set pixel of interest until compression of the first depiction data is completed.
