Linear polymers of ethylene of density above 0.955 gm./c.c. are prepared by reacting ethylene alone or with minor proportions of other a -olefins in a reactor at pressures of at least 750 p.s.i.g. and temperatures of 50 DEG to 100 DEG C. in the presence of an inert hydrocarbon diluent having a boiling point below 10 DEG C. using as catalyst a titanium halide in which the titanium is in a lower valency state and is activated with an aluminium compound containing at least one metal to carbon bond, the aluminium to titanium atomic ratio being at least 2: 1. Specified comonomers are propylene, butene-1, pentene-1, hexene-1, octene-1, 4-methylpentene-1, 4,4-dimethylpentene-1, 3-methylbutene-1 and 3,3-dimethylbutene-1. Hydrogen may be present as modifier, and specified diluents are ethane, propane, butane, isobutane, and neopentane. Preferred catalyst components are titanium trichloride, which may be co-crystallized with magnesium, zinc or aluminium halides, and aluminium trialkyl or dialkyl monohalides, preferably aluminium triethyl. The catalyst may be prepared in the inert diluent and pretreated at elevated temperature with butene-1. The diluent may be pretreated with aluminium alkyl. The process may be effected continuously. Examples describe the polymerization of ethylene and the copolymeri-zation thereof with butene-1, propylene, pentene-1 and 4-methylpentene-1, and apparatus suitable for carrying out the process is described and illustrated. Specifications 908,101 and 1,006,649 are referred to. |
